Another Dual Screen Concept Tablet

Toshiba Libretto dual-screen tablet hitting the U.S.

by Sumocat, www.engadget.com:

Toshiba’s dual-screen concept tablet called Libretto was launched in Japan as a limited-edition to celebrate their 25th anniversary. Seemed unlikely we’d see it on sale in the States, but it turns out that limited-edition wasn’t so limited, as ToshibaDirect andAmazon are both offering it here for $1099.99.

The device features a pair of 7-inch, 1024×600 displays that can work together in a variety of ways, from a standard dual-display to one acting as an keyboard with multi-mode, on-screen ‘board. The video demo also shows the device held upright as an eReader with left- and right-facing pages or one screen acting as a “bulletin board” catch-all that offers the ability to grab images and a variety of gadgets, such as clock, calendar, calculator and labels.

While the design is very similar to Courier, it is not a pen-input device, relying solely on multi-touch. The specs are quite nice with 1.2GHz Intel Pentium U5400 dual core processor, 2GB memory, 64GB SSD, 802.11bgn, Bluetooth 2.1, and 1.0MP webcam with log-on face recognition, all in a 1.8lbs package with 8-cell battery and running Windows 7 Home Premium.

Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type puts a touchscreen on your Series 40 featurephone

By Vlad Savov, via www.engadget.com:

Nokia has just revealed its X3-02 handset, which does the unthinkable and marries a relatively standard 16-button keypad with a 2.4-inch QVGA touchscreen. Now, we might have our reservations about Nokia’s S40 OS being able to translate to a touch-friendly UI, but the beauty of this phone is that touch comes as essentially a free extra rather than the fundamental navigation paradigm. It’s augmented with 3G, 802.11n WiFi, and Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity, and the whole thing is wrapped within a 9.6mm-thin brushed aluminum shell. All that, and the X3-02 will only cost €125 (before sales taxes and subsidies, as usual) when it launches later this quarter. See it on video after the break.

Update: Nokia has informed us the X3-02 uses a resistive touchscreen, no real surprise given its price.

Nokia N8 pre-orders go live

By Chris Ziegler, www.engadget.com:

Itching to get some hands-on time with Symbian^3? Or maybe it’s the promise of a 12 megapixel camera that’s drawing you? Whatever the case may be, you might be interested to know that Nokia‘s US outpost is now ready to take your name down for an N8 with availability expected at the “end of September 2010.” In the past, Nokia has often bundled goodies like Bluetooth headsets for anyone willing to pre-order well ahead of time, but not so much this time around — $549 will net you the phone, and that’s it. Heck, they’re not even throwing in free shipping. Maybe waiting for the actual release isn’t that bad of an idea, eh?

The KNO: Targeting Colleges and Universities

by Warner Crocker, via www.gottabemobile.com:

Wow. I guess size can matter. At least that’s what the folks behind the Kno Tablet think. This dual screen Tablet has two 14.1 inch screens. That’s a lot of real estate, and asTechnology Review says it feels like you’re cracking open a MacBook Pro when you open it. But that’s not stopping the folks behind the Kno.

This is aimed squarely at the education sector and one of the big selling points is that publishers don’t have to change what they already do to have their textbooks display properly in PDF format. Both screens are touch screens and both accept pen input. Battery life is supposedly all day and you can carry 8 terms (semesters) of books, notes, etc… on the device. It’s not out yet, and the Kno website says they are looking for folks to help them shape the future.

The Kno will be available to 100 students spread across three unnamed colleges or universities this fall. Although I don’t think something this size will be too easy to keep a secret. There’s a lot we don’t know about the Kno, so we’d love to hear from anyone who sees one.

HP tells employees webOS tablet coming Q1 2011

Normally I dont post twice in one day, but this little tidbit from www.engadget.com caught my attention!  Hopefully this means a successor to my beloved TC1100!!

By Nilay Patel

We’ve been trying to find out when HP would launch awebOS tablet since the company first bought Palm, and we’re now hearing from several trusted sources that it’ll be calendar Q1 2011. We’re told Personal Systems Group VP Todd Bradley mentioned the date during an all-hands employee meeting yesterday, and that the project is indeed known internally as “Hurricane.” (We’re assuming this is what that PalmPad trademark filing was for, but we can’t confirm that.) Shipping a killer tablet would be one way to change the subject from ex-CEO Mark Hurd’s recent troubles, we suppose — but we’re definitely wondering if HP is actually going to support three different tablet operating systems after it launches the Windows 7-based Slate for the enterprise and the Android-based Zeen e-reader tablet for consumers as well. We’ll see — Q1 could be mighty interesting.

All together now: “Finally!” At long last, the leaks are being plugged by none other than Verizon itself, who today confirmed that the Droid 2 is more than just a figment of everyone’s imagination. RIM BlackPad tablet priced at $499 when it ships in November?

By Thomas Ricker, via www.engadget.com:

Come on, admit it, you want to believe that RIM is working on a tablet called the BlackPad don’t you? You’d better, because Apple Daily is piling on with more unsubstantiated rumor this morning. So, in addition to the 9.7-inch display, Bluetooth, WiFi, and front- and rear-facing cameras already mentionedby Bloomberg‘s sources, Apple Daily claims that Quanta won the bid to manufacture the tablet with plans to ramp up for 2 million units starting in September (for a November retail launch) with another 8 million planned for 2011. The price? $499 is the target, naturally.

Implantable blood sugar sensor could eliminate daily finger pricks

By Darren Murph, www.engadget.com:

Science has been figuring out ways to sidestep those dreaded finger pricks for years now, but it’s not often that we hear of such a permanent solution as this. A crew of researchers from The University of Tokyo and BEANS Research Institute are in the process of developing a newfangled blood sugar sensor that “reacts to glucose and lights up inside the body.” ‘Course, injecting dyes into humans in order to receive interpretable signals ain’t exactly new, but hydrogel is what makes this approach unique. As the story goes, this jelly-esque material can be implanted within the body, enabling blood sugar levels to be monitored and measured externally with no pain or irritation whatsoever. In theory, a monitoring system could trigger an alert as soon as the internal levels dipped or rose beyond a predetermined extreme, giving those with diabetes a maximum amount of time to get things back in balance.

This business-oriented 10.1-incher boasts options galore, including a choice of Atom N455 or N475 CPUs, an up to 320GB HDD or an up to 128GB SSDan optional touchscreen display, optional Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator, and optional Bluetooth 2.1+EDR. Other than that, it’s going to feature up to 2GB of RAMIntel GMA 3150 graphics, gigabit ethernet, three USB 2.0 ports, VGA, and an SD card reader and WiFi b/g/n and a 2 megapixel webcam. This puppy’s going to run €429 (that’s around $565) in Italy — and while there’s no word yet on pricing or availability elsewhere, we do know that the Mini 5102 is currently nowhere to be found on the US site, either, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see this one pop up any day now.
